Microneedling with PRP (platelet rich plasma), also known as Collagen Induction Therapy is ideal for the treatment of acne scars and pitting, surgical scars, stretch marks, wrinkles and fine lines, hyperpigmentation, lax skin, sun damaged, large pores, and uneven skin texture. It is a safe and controlled method of treatment and can be performed either on the face or body, and is suitable for different skin types and colors.
How Microneedling with PRP Works
Microneedling with PRP is a minimally invasive skin rejuvenation treatment with quick recovery time and is designed to stimulate the body’s natural collagen production. The treatment involves the use of two procedures, microneedling and PRP done consecutively.
The first procedure is called Microneedling. A small hand held, automatic device that contains tiny micro-needles is passed over the skin creating tiny micro-wounds, or channels, on the skin. During the body’s natural wound-healing process of these channels, collagen and elastin are automatically produced. Your skin normally assumes that scars, stretch marks and wrinkles are repaired, but with microneedling treatments, the skin is tricked into repairing itself. The process of microneedling skin remodeling can go on for months after each microneedling treatment. Results can be seen within a week or even a few days. Your skin naturally heals itself every 45 days, so with a little microneedling stimulation changes can be dramatic and fast.
PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma)
The second procedure is called PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma). Platelet Rich Plasma is produced from an individual’s own blood. After a blood sample is obtained from a patient, the blood is put into a centrifuge, which helps separate the PRP from the blood. The blood is spun for approximately 15 minutes. PRP contains highly concentrated amounts of natural growth factors and other cytokines that promote the regeneration process of soft tissues. The PRP is applied directly to the channels that were created from the microneedling to further stimulate the natural healing process and creation of collagen.
How is it performed?
Skin needling procedures are performed in a safe and precise manner with the use of sterile needle head. The procedure is normally completed within 45-60 minutes depending on the required treatment and anatomical site. Before the procedure starts a topical anesthetic will be applied to your skin to ensure a comfortable experience. After the skin is numbed, the physician gently moves the microneedling device over your skin to puncture the epidermis layers of the skin and create miniscule sub-cutaneous injuries. These microscopic wounds stimulate new collagen deposition which may last for up to a year, yet they close within less than an hour.
What is The Skin’s Appearance after the Treatment?
After the procedure your skin may be red and flushed similar to mild sunburn. You may also experience tightness and mild sensitivity-to-touch on the area being treated. This diminishes greatly after a few hours following treatment and within the next 24 hours the skin should be healed. Your body’s collagen production usually takes about 4-8 weeks, so you will continue to see improvements over this time.
How quickly are results visible?
Visible results of skin rejuvenation are generally seen within 24 hours and gradually become more apparent after just 6-8 weeks following the procedure; the results typically continue to improve further over time. A series of microneedling sessions is usually recommended to achieve optimum results, depending on the skin condition; however, skin improvement may be noticeable even after just one treatment.
